Addendum to Ode to Matatus

Riding along as I do in comparative bliss inside the confines of a matatu, I have come to recognize the many tunes that form the backbone of matatu music selection. In this time, there has been little in the way of female singers. The unfortunate fact is that they aren’t all that popular with the teams, despite the fact that the djs who compile the mix-cd/mix-cd-dvds do. There may be only a few songs that feature female vocalists, but then the driver will fast track over these to make it to the next song, be it a tough street ballad by an American rapper or a lingala love song.  It’s a bit of a shame, but an interesting observation…or it could just be that the driver of my particular matatu didn’t want to admit he liked the female vocalist to the riders.
